Q: When should I first enroll in Medicare?
Most people become eligible for Medicare at age 65. Your Initial Enrollment Period is a 7-month window that begins three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after. If you’re still working and have employer coverage, your timing may be different. HCS can help you understand when to enroll and avoid unnecessary penalties or gaps in coverage.
Q: What's the difference between Medicare Advantage and Supplement plans?
Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans work very differently. Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits through a private insurance company and may include provider networks, prescription coverage, and additional benefits. Medicare Supplements work alongside Original Medicare to help cover many of the costs Medicare leaves behind and generally allow you to see any provider nationwide who accepts Medicare.
Q: Do I need Part D if I don't take many medications?
Even if you take few or no prescriptions today, it may still make sense to enroll in Part D when you’re first eligible. Going without Part D or other creditable prescription coverage for 63 days or more can result in a late-enrollment penalty if you decide to enroll later. We can help you compare available plans based on your medications and overall costs.
Q: Can I keep my current doctor?
It depends on the type of Medicare coverage you choose. With Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement, you can generally see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans typically use provider networks, so it’s important to confirm that your doctors, hospitals, and specialists participate before enrolling.
