Medicare Advantage Plan
- 2027 Medicare Coverage Changes
What Happens If Your Medicare Advantage Plan Is Leaving Your Area?
Each year, Medicare Advantage plans can change their benefits, provider networks, service areas—or decide not to renew their Medicare contract. If your plan will no longer be available in your county for 2027, you must select new coverage to avoid being left without the health and prescription drug coverage you expected.
The good news is that you have options, and Health Coverage Solutions can help you understand them.

Why Is My Medicare Advantage Plan Ending?
A Medicare Advantage plan may leave your area because:
The insurance company is reducing its service area
The plan is no longer being offered in your county
The insurance company is ending its contract with Medicare
Two plans are being combined or replaced
The plan is being discontinued for business or financial reasons
This does not mean you are losing Medicare. It means you need to choose a new way to receive your Medicare benefits.
How Will I Know If My Plan Is Leaving?
Your insurance company should send you a written notice explaining that your plan will not be available the following year. Carefully review every letter you receive from your current plan, especially your Annual Notice of Change.
Do not assume that you will automatically be enrolled in a comparable replacement plan.
What Are My Coverage Options?
If your Medicare Advantage plan is ending, you may generally choose between two paths.
Option 1: Enroll in Another Medicare Advantage Plan
You can compare the Medicare Advantage plans available in your county for 2027. Before enrolling, make sure you review:
- Your doctors and preferred hospitals
- Prescription drug coverage
- Pharmacy networks
- Copayments and deductibles
- Maximum annual out-of-pocket costs
- Prior-authorization requirements
- Additional dental, vision, hearing or transportation benefits
A plan with a low or $0 monthly premium is not automatically the best choice. Your providers, medications and expected healthcare needs should be considered.
Option 2: Return to Original Medicare
You may also be able to return to Original Medicare and consider adding:
- A Medicare Supplement insurance policy, also called Medigap
- A stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan
When a Medicare Advantage plan leaves Medicare or stops serving your area, affected members may have guaranteed-issue rights to purchase certain Medicare Supplement plans without medical underwriting. Your eligibility, available plans and application deadline should be reviewed carefully.
What Are Guaranteed-Issue Rights?
Guaranteed-issue rights can allow you to purchase an eligible Medicare Supplement plan without answering health questions or being denied because of a pre-existing condition.
For qualifying plan terminations, the federal application window generally begins 60 days before your Medicare Advantage coverage ends and continues for up to 63 days afterward. State-specific protections may provide additional options.
This is an important opportunity. After the guaranteed-issue period ends, you may be required to complete medical underwriting to qualify for a Medicare Supplement plan.
When Can I Select New Coverage?
Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7. During this period, you can select a new Medicare Advantage or prescription drug plan for coverage beginning January 1.
If your plan’s Medicare contract is not renewed, you may also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Medicare states that this special opportunity begins before the contract ends and continues for a limited time afterward.
Because different enrollment and Medigap deadlines may apply, it is best to review your options as soon as you receive your termination notice.

Don’t Wait Until Your Coverage Ends
A plan termination can create a valuable opportunity to reconsider how you receive your Medicare benefits—but timing matters. Before making a decision, compare the complete cost and coverage of each option, including your doctors, medications and potential out-of-pocket expenses.
